When people hear the phrase “The Science of Reading,” it can sometimes sound a little intimidating or overly academic. Dense research papers, complex brain scans, cognitive science… whew! But here’s my favorite secret: implementing the Science of Reading in your classroom or home doesn’t have to feel dry or rigid at all.

You don’t need a PhD to teach with structured literacy; you just need intentional, high-impact activities that fit naturally into your daily routine:

Phoneme Tapping with Play-Doh 🟢: Before writing letters, build phonemic awareness! Have your learner squish a ball of dough for every individual sound they hear in a word (e.g.,
/s/–/u/–/n/). -
Elkonin Sound Boxes with Mini Erasers 🚗: Slide cute mini erasers or toy cars into boxes as you map out individual sounds in a word.

Syllable Chumping & Stomping 🦶: Get those wiggles out! Stomp out multisyllabic words to help kids feel word structure rhythmically.
